Surface Preparation Required:
First: Apply to the roof surface a 2.5%-5% Sodium Hypochlorite (e.g. "Clorox") solution to
completely kill all mold, mildew, fungus and other growths on the surface, in cracks, crevices, etc. Repeat if necessary. Second
: Clean the surface, so that it is completely free of anything such as oil, dirt, or soot that could adversely affect adhesion of paint to the surface. Third
: Rinse with clean water from a hose, using normal domestic water pressure. Fourth: Allow to dry thoroughly before applying Primer.
Prime and 2nd Coat (Acrylic System)
: SOMAY Product No. 7751, "PRIME & SEAL" (Clear). This primer is used to penetrate and
fill the pores of the shingle surface. The acrylic resin will renew, fortify, and restore life to the old shingles, helping to seal, protect, preserve and prolong the life of your roof and provide
a tie-coat for the second coat. You should use one (1) gallon for every 150 to 200 sq. ft. of roof surface, at a cost of approx. 10¢ per sq. ft. per mil DFT. Second Coat:
Apply SOMAY Product No. 842-01, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC"® (White). This is a 100% acrylic resin-based,water-borne, heavy-duty elastic coating. Use a gallon for every 50 sq.ft.
of surface area, at a cost of approx.42¢ per sq. ft. When dry, apply the third (finish) coat (see below and next page).
Third or Finish Coat (4 Alternatives):
A. SOMAY Product No. 8630-01 – SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD"® Fungistatic Paint (White), a
unique 100% Acrylic Latex, Heavy-Duty, Industrial Strength coating that has been proven by independent tests to be the most resistant to the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus on its surface. Has
a "low-luster" or"eggshell" finish. Apply at the rate of 368 sq.ft./gal. to develop a 2 mil DFT, at an approx. cost of 8¢/sq.ft. For longer durability, use two (2) finish coats, totaling 4 mils DFT @ 16¢/sq.ft.
B. SOMAY Product No. No. 682-01 – "PREMIUM" "STAY-WHITE" 100% Acrylic Latex Semi-Gloss Enamel Roof Paint (White). Apply at the rate of 227 sq.ft./gal., to develop a 2 mil DFT, at an approx. cost
of 8¢/sq.ft. For longer durability, use two (2) finish coats, totaling 4 mils DFT @ approx. 16¢/sq.ft.
C. SOMAY Product No. No. 345-01 – "PREMIUM" "STAY-WHITE" Vinyl-Acrylic Latex Flat Roof Paint (White)Apply at the rate of 230 sq.ft./gal. to develop a 2 mil DFT at an approx. cost of
4¢/sq.ft. For longer durability, use two (2) finish coats, totaling 4 mils DFT @ 8¢/sq.ft.D. SOMAY CUSTOM MANUFACTURED ROOF PAINT in a Custom Color - If you want a
finish color other than "White", SOMAY offers a full range of custom colors in either a "PREMIUM" 100% Acrylic Latex, HeavyDuty, Industrial Strength, Semi-Gloss Enamel
(SOMAY's 630 line) or in a "PREMIUM" Vinyl/Acrylic Latex Flat Paint (SOMAY's 340 line). You should plan on a spreading rate of approx. 200 sq.ft./gallon for either of these products.
SOMAY can manufacture any custom color you want. Each custom color is priced individu- ally, depending on the cost to make the color selected. All custom manufactured products
require non-refundable payment-in-full with your order.
NOTES: Applying a SOMAY ROOF PAINT SYSTEM to a roof will help to seal, protect and preserve the roof so that it can last indefinitely. A properly protected and maintained roof surface
should never have to be replaced! A "White" roof surface will reflect a significant percentage of the sun's ultraviolet light and heat,
reduce heat build-up in your attic, reduce air-conditioning energy consumption and costs, reduce the daily thermal shock to your roof structure and building caused by the daily heating and
cooling of your roof surface, and dramatically reduce the rate of aging of buildings. "White" roofs are encouraged by Cool Communities, American Forests, the Florida Solar Energy
Center, etc. to reduce the "Urban Heat Island", reduce peak-load energy use and help our environment. SOMAY's "Premium" Roof Paints contain the maximum
amount of mildewcide, bactericide and fungicide allowed by law and EPA regulations to provide the maximum allowable resistance to mildew growth on painted surfaces
All the above paints will "breathe" to allow moisture vapor to escape from the roof structure. However, tar-based products like asphalt shingles, fiberglass shingles, roll roofing, 90-lb. "Slate",
tar paper, etc. can NOT breathe! Coverage rates are theoretical rates for "smooth, non-porous surfaces" (such as glass). Rough
and/or porous surfaces will reduce spreading rates and require the use of considerably more material.
DFT = Dry Film Thickness of the applied coating or paint. It is what remains on the painted surface after the solvent evaporates from the applied paint. It is measured in mils. A mil
is 1/1000th of an inch in thickness. This piece of paper is 2.5 mils thick! How thick a coat of
paint do you want? 1 mil? 2 mils? 3 mils? The thicker the paint film you apply, the longer it
will last. So don't spread any coat of paint too thin! The difference in cost is only a penny or so per square foot, regardless of what paint you use.
Paint = Protection! All paints should be applied full strength as supplied by SOMAY. Never thin, dilute, or adulterate
any SOMAY paint with any other product at any time. Thinning always reduces the volume solids and reduces the paint's ability to adhere to a surface and to resist environmental degradation,
dramatically shortening the life of the paint.
