The same active ingredients which have been used for decades in very costly fungistatic coatings used in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries, in hospital operating rooms, clinics, electronic and other high-technology "clean rooms", and wherever the strictest hygiene was required, are now available in SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint for use by real-estate management firms and fastidious homeowners who want a reasonably priced surface coating that can help inhibit bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus growth on its surface, safely, and effectively. Proven in use around the world for over 30 years, the active ingredients in SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint are non-soluble, non-leachable, non-toxic, non-poisonous, non-polluting, and non-hazardous; thus SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint is effective as long as the paint film remains exposed on the surface, and the surface does NOT become covered or encapsulated by dirt so that the paint is unexposed.

Using its seven decades of "Premium" Paint formulating experience, SOMAY has incorporated these active ingredients into our most popular 100% Acrylic Resin-based, Heavy-Duty, Industrial Strength, Exterior/Interior paint formulation, which also incorporates the latest technology for a thixotropic paint that is both environmentally and user friendly, and thus safe and easy to use to get superior, professional-looking results and many years of long-term durability .

SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint is therefore the ideal paint for use on roof surfaces, wall surfaces (both exterior or interior), in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and even inside air conditioning ducts and plenums and other high-humidity areas where a mildew, bacteria, mold and fungus inhibitive finish is desired, especially in humid, tropical areas of the world .

After years  of testing and real world application by the Florida School Plant Management Association, SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint has been approved and certified by the FSPMA for use in schools throughout the State, under Specification MP-47.1, Mold and Mildew Proof Acrylic Paint, effective 10/3/2007

SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface to which SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint is to be applied MUST be thoroughly clean and completely free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of the coating to the surface, including: all previous coatings which are glossy, loose, scaling, chipping, flaking, blistering, powdering, peeling or chalking; all dust, dirt, soot, sand, gravel, grease, oil, uncured or infirm tar, curing agents, parting compounds, wax, soap film, rust, oxidation or petroleum-based residue;  lye, lime, chlorine, salt or salt film, calcimine, efflorescence, or any other chemically reactive substance;  and MUST be free of all mold, mildew, fungus and other growing organism.  Infirm surfaces MUST be made firm.

CLEANING

A high-pressure (min. 2,500 P.S.I. at the tip) water blast should be used to thoroughly clean all surfaces prior to the application of a coating.  Mildew and similar growths MUST be killed with a 2%-3% chlorine solution in water (e.g. "Clorox" diluted 1:1 with water), followed by a thorough rinse with clean water. Note:  Protect landscaping from chlorine solution runoff.

DRY THE SURFACE:

Allow clean surfaces to dry thoroughly.  If the surface to be coated is wet or damp, wait for it to dry or accelerate the drying by using a fan or a blower from a hair dryer or the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner .

PRIME ALL POROUS SURFACES:

Following proper surface preparation, all porous surfaces such as Asphalt Shingles, Asbestos Shingles, Fiberglass Shingles, Composition Shingles, Asphalt Roll Roofing, 90 Pound "Slate", Tar Paper, Concrete, Flat Tiles, Barrel Tiles, etc. should be primed with either (A) SOMAY Product No. 7751, SOMAY PRIME & SEAL , (Clear), or (B) SOMAY Product No. 777, SOMAY "PST" (Clear), using one (1) gallon (3.79 L) for every 200 sq.ft. (18.58 sq.m.) of surface,  to seal the pores in the shingles, tiles, etc.  Allow to dry thoroughly

FERROUS METAL (STEEL) SURFACES:

SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint should not be applied directly over a steel (ferrous metal) surface unless the steel has been previously primed, painted or "galvanized".

SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint can be applied directly to clean, weathered, galvanized steel surfaces, or to primed or previously painted steel surfaces, and directly over SOMAY Product No. 636, FERROUS METAL PRIMER or similar coating that is dry and cured.

DO NOT THIN

SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint MUST BE APPLIED FULL STRENGTH as it is supplied by SOMAY.  NEVER THIN, DILUTE OR ADULTERATE with any other material.  Any thinning will reduce the percentage of solids, which will adversely affect the effectiveness, the adhesiveness, the hiding, the sealing ability, the long-term durability and the mildew, mold, bacteria and fungus inhibiting qualities of the applied coating.  This is a thixotropic paint which will appear thick in the can, but it will spread easily and smoothly when applied to a properly prepared surface, giving a superior, professional looking finish without thinning.

APPLICATION RATE

Apply ONLY to Properly Prepared,
Primed, Dry Surfaces

To develop a protective membrane with SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint, a MINIMUM of TWO (2) FULL COATS, each 2 mils (51 Microns) thick, MUST BE APPLIED, providing a TOTAL MINIMUM DRY FILM THICKNESS for both coats of 4 mils (102 Microns).  Apply first coat of SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint on a very smooth, nonporous surface, using one (1) gallon (3.79 L) to cover up to, but never more than, 300 sq.ft. with a 2 mils (51 Microns) dry film thick coating.   Allow surface to dry thoroughly.

Apply second coat of SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint, again using one (1) gallon to cover each 300 sq. ft. of surface with another 2 mil (51 Microns) dry film thick coating.

The actual spreading rates will be considerably less on rough, textured and/or porous surfaces, in which case more material must be used to develop the required minimum dry film thickness of 4 mils (102 Microns) over the entire surface.

Measure to Apply Proper Thickness

Measure carefully an area that  is exactly 10 ft. x 30 ft. = 300 sq.ft., and be sure to apply one (1) full gallon (3.79 L.) within that area ... when dry, apply a second gallon in this 300 sq. ft. area; or measure exactly 10 ft. x 150  ft.  =  1500 sq. ft. and be sure to apply five  (5) gallons (18.95 L.) within that area ... when dry, apply a second 5 gallons in this 1500 sq. ft. area.  Don't guess!  Measure to be sure, because proper thickness is the key to a successful application and long-term durability.

APPLICATION METHOD & EQUIPMENT

Brush Application

On residential walls, roofs, etc. an easy, practical and effective application method is to use a high quality brush, laying the SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint onto the surface at the proper thickness to create a continuous, seamless membrane.

Roller Application

On small wall and roof surfaces, a very smooth, very short nap (1/8") roller can be used if you work very slowly and with very light pressure on the roller, so as not to "whip" air into the coating causing "bubbles" to develop on the surface.  Remember that the objective is to apply the proper thickness of coating, NOT to spread out the coating like a normal paint.

Airless Spray Application

On larger roof surfaces, SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint may be applied using conventional airless spray equipment. Do not thin this paint.

NOTE:  The surface area to be coated must be measured very carefully to insure the proper amount of material is applied to develop the required coating thickness.  The above quantities are the minimum amounts that MUST be applied to very smooth, non-porous surfaces.  Rough, porous surfaces will require considerably more material than the quantities shown above to develop the required film (membrane) thickness.  These quantities do NOT include any factor for wastage, which most professional applicators would assume would be at least 10%.  So one should purchase at least 10% more material than the minimum quantities shown above .

WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS

Apply only when both ambient and surface temperatures are above 50° F. (10° C.), and at least 5 above the dew point, and the temperature is rising and the relative humidity is falling.  Apply only when the weather will be fair for a sufficiently long time for the coating to dry.  Do not apply late in the afternoon or early evening, when heavy dew could develop before the coating dries.  A heavy rainstorm could wash the coating off during the first few hours after application if the coating has not dried sufficiently to become rain resistant.  Before application, keep from freezing while in transit or storage.  Store in cool areas protected from exposure to direct sunlight.

DRYING TIME

Drying time will vary depending on both ambient and surface temperature, relative humidity, wind or air movement, exposure to sunlight, thickness of coating applied, etc.  Under ideal drying conditions, 50% (or lower) relative humidity, 75° F. (24° C.) or higher ambient temperature, etc., SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint forms a dew or light shower-resistant membrane in approx. 60 minutes after application, and dries sufficiently in approx. twenty-four (24) hours to permit the application of the second coat of SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint .  A longer drying time will be required if the surface being coated is not completely dry, if the air or surface temperature is below 50° F. (10° C.), if the relative humidity is higher than 90%, if the air is calm, if the surface is not exposed to direct sunlight, or if too thick a coat is applied.

CLEAN-UP

Using clean water, IMMEDIATELY flush spills or drips from shrubbery, walkways, driveways, etc., before SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint is allowed to set up.  Application tools and equipment may be cleaned with warm, soapy water before the coating dries.

COLORS

SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint is stocked in "White".  Pastel Custom Colors may be tinted using most Universal Colorants; Factory made Custom Color batches require a minimum order of fifty (50) gallons of one color, and payment with the order prior to manufacture.

MAINTENANCE

Keep in mind that in order for this SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint surface to work, it must be kept clean of dirt that could cover the paint surface and encapsulate the active fungicidal ingredients.  Therefore, while a SOMAY "STERI-SHIELD" Fungistatic Paint surface usually requires NO special or unusual maintenance, should the surface become soiled by, for example, leaves from overhanging tree limbs, DO NOT pressure clean with a high-pressure water blast.  Rather, using a manually pumped-up two-gallon garden sprayer, apply a light mist spray of a 2%  to  3%  chlorine solution  in  water  (e.g. "Clorox" diluted 1:1 with water), allowing the chlorine to bleach the surface clean.  Then just gently rinse the cleaned surface with fresh water from a garden hose.  This should have no deleterious effect on the coating system.
