SOMAY Sports Court Coating

PRODUCT USE: This is the finest, premium quality, acrylic latex sports court coating available from modern chemical technology. SOMAY Sports Court Coating has been especially formulated to create a skid-resistant surface when applied on tennis courts, paddle courts, hand ball courts, basketball courts, volley ball courts, etc. It will help to seal, weatherproof, protect and preserve any firm surface, making it more attractive at the same time. It dries quickly, providing an exceptionally tough, durable finish.

RECOMMENDED FOR: SOMAY Sports Court Coating is recommended for use on all exterior or interior sports court surfaces that are fully cured, firm, and properly prepared, including concrete, macadam, all-weather, asphalt or bituminous-based composition surfaces, wood, etc. Can also be used on other hard surfaces such as stone, bricks, unglazed tile, cement tile, concrete block, slate, wood, properly prepared and/or primed metal, etc.

SOMAY Sports Court Coating is NOT recommended for use on a surface on which heavy motor vehicles with hot tires may be parked. The combination of heat and pressure from the weight of the heavy motor vehicle could result in loss of adhesion to the substrate and film pick-up by the hot tires. SOMAY Sports Court Coating is NOT recommended for use over uncured wood, tar that is still soft, or any other infirm surface, or any surface that has not been properly prepared.

SURFACE PREPARATION: The secret of a successful painting job is proper surface preparation. Surfaces MUST be free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of this coating to the surface, including loose, scaling, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking, flaking, chalking or powdering paint; dust, dirt, sand, soot, grease, oil, tar, wax, soap film or petroleum-based residue; lye, lime, chlorine, salt, calcimine, efflorescence, or any other chemically reactive substance; and must be completely free of all mold, fungus, mildew or any other growing organism of any kind. Infirm surfaces MUST be made firm.

CLEANING: The surface should be cleaned with high-pressure water blast (min. 3,000 P.S.I.) to remove all dirt and loose particles. If surface is dirty or soiled by any oily material that could prevent good adhesion of the coating, then it must be thoroughly cleaned with a "Heavy-Duty Degreaser", repeating this step as many times as is necessary and until surface is completely clean. Flush thoroughly with clean water and squeegee dry.

CAULK CRACKS AND JOINTS: Joints and cracks should be filled with SOMAY Product No. 992, "PATCH & SEAL", so that they are flush and smooth with the surrounding surface.

UNCOATED SURFACES: New surfaces can be coated after the surface has thoroughly cured and has been properly prepared. Be sure all loose sand or powdering material is removed. If dirty, follow cleaning instructions above.

SMOOTHLY FINISHED CONCRETE SURFACES: MUST be acid-etched before coating. Mix one (1) gallon (3.785L) of 20% Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) with one (1) gallon of water in a plastic container. One (1) gallon (3.785L) of this mixture will etch approximately 50 sq. ft. of surface area. Apply using a natural straw broom and spread the solution evenly over the floor surface. Let the solution stand for approx. 3-5 minutes, or until all bubbling or fizzing ceases. The etching is then finished and the concrete floor should have a rough, sandpaper-like texture or profile. Never let acid dry on the surface. Flush thoroughly with clean water. Remove all water with a squeegee or wet/dry vacuum. Repeat as many times as necessary until the entire floor surface has the texture of rough sandpaper.  See separate page on preparing concrete surfaces.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: Be sure to remove ALL loose, scaling, flaking, chipping, peeling or powdering paint. Sand all glossy surfaces until they are roughened and dull. If dirty, follow cleaning instruction above.

APPLICATION: Surface should be dry and cool. Do NOT apply to a very hot surface, as this could inhibit the paint penetrating the pores of the surface and result in poor adhesion of the coating to the surface.  Exterior painting should be started only when there is NO possibility of inclement weather, such as rain or heavy dew, and the relative humidity does not exceed 90%. Note: Do NOT allow prepared surface to become contaminated between the preparation and application steps … for example, be sure to wear only clean, dry shoes when walking on the clean surface area to be coated. Stir thoroughly before using and keep well agitated while applying. Apply generously, working coating into all pores and cracks, then smooth out to create a uniform, smooth coating across the entire surface area. May be applied by roller, brush, squeegee or spray.

THINNING: MUST BE APPLIED FULL STRENGTH as it is supplied by SOMAY. NEVER THIN, DILUTE OR ADULTERATE with any other material. Any thinning will reduce the percentage of solids, which will adversely affect the adhesiveness, the hiding, the sealing ability and the durability of the applied coating.

COVERAGE: The amount of coating required will depend on the roughness and porosity of the surface being coated. On a hard, smooth, non-porous surface, apply at a spreading rate of approximately 100 sq.ft./gal., to develop a dry film thickness of approximately 8 to 10 mils (each mil = 1/1000th of an inch). On a porous, rough, textured or unsealed surface, a gallon will cover somewhat fewer square feet and considerably more material may be needed.

WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: Apply only when both the ambient (air) and surface temperature is above 50° F. and relative humidity is below 90%. Approximately one hour of good drying weather is necessary for a rain and dew resistant skin to form on the coating.

DRYING TIME: Drying time is controlled by the thickness of the applied coating, relative humidity, surface and air temperature, exposure to direct sunlight and wind or air movement. A longer drying time will be required if too thick a coat is applied, or the relative humidity is higher than 90%, or the temperature is below 50° F. Under normal conditions, "sets-up", forming a rain and dew-resistant membrane in approximately 60 minutes after the application, and dries sufficiently in approximately 24 hours to permit the application of a second coat. SOMAY Sports Court Coating continues curing, getting tougher and tougher over a period of several weeks. Under normal drying conditions, light foot traffic is possible after 24 hours, but allow at least 3 days prior to rough usage.

CLEAN UP: Clean hands, brushes, rollers, tools and other equipment immediately after use in warm, soapy water.

ANTI-SKID FEATURES:SOMAY Sports Court Coating contains a very effective aggregate to give anti-skid characteristics to the coated surface. However, should additional skid resistance be desired, the applicator can add more (up to 1 quart) of SOMAY Non-Skid Additive directly to each gallon prior to application. Stir the mixture thoroughly prior to the application, so that the anti-skid additive stays in suspension and does not settle on the bottom of the container.

RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE: Under normal circumstances, the coating does not require any particular attention. If desired, the coating may be cleaned with low-pressure water from a household garden hose and/or with a mild detergent solution, followed by a clean water rinse. Should the coating become scarred, it is easily touched up by applying another coat or two to the damaged area, after proper cleaning and preparation. In the future, should a renewal coat be desired, simply clean the original coating thoroughly, and apply the new coating directly over the original.
