SOMAY POLYURETHANE HIGH GLOSS ENAMEL

Product No. 237

PRODUCT USE: For exterior or interior use on practically all types of properly prepared surfaces where a durable, high gloss enamel finish is desired. SOMAY Polyurethane High Gloss Enamel can be used on previously painted or properly primed surfaces such as wood, iron, steel, aluminum, masonry, plaster, sheetrock, drywall, wallboard or concrete, and on walls, trim, doors, wood or well-cured, properly prepared concrete floors, machinery, toys, equipment, etc.

RECOMMENDED FOR: This tough, long wearing, weather resistant, polyurethane based enamel has been especially formulated to meet the requirements for a high-gloss, high quality enamel. SOMAY Polyurethane High Gloss Enamel will dry quickly, even in a very muggy, very high-humidity environment, such as that found in tropical climates. The drying time can be modified depending on the climatic conditions at the time of painting. SOMAY Polyurethane High Gloss Enamel contains no lead and no mercury, so is ideal for children's toys or furniture.

SPECIFICATION: SOMAY Polyurethane High Gloss Enamel meets or exceeds U.S. Federal Government Specification TT-P-489.

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE: SOMAY Polyurethane High Gloss Enamel will resist temperatures up to 200° F. (93° C.) continuous, or 250° F. intermittent.

SURFACE PREPARATION: The secret of a successful painting job is proper surface preparation. Surfaces MUST be free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of this coating to the surface, including loose, scaling, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking, flaking, chalking or powdering paint; dust, dirt, sand, soot, grease, oil, tar, wax, soap film or petroleum-based residue; lye, lime, salt, chlorine, calcimine, efflorescence, or any other chemically reactive substance; and must be completely free of all mold, fungus, mildew or any other growing organism of any kind. Infirm surfaces MUST be made firm.

To remove dirt, grease, etc., wash with water and detergent and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. To remove mildew, fungus, etc., scrub with a solution made with 16 fluid ounces (473 mL) of liquid household bleach and 2 fluid ounces (59 mL) of detergent in one gallon (3.785 L) of water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Patch all cracks, and when dry, sand smooth and seal. You should have a completely clean and firm surface before any new coating is applied.

All traces of paint remover, liquid sandpaper, etc. must be eliminated. If surface is not clean, clean with a good commercial cleaner and rinse well. Just before painting, surface should be wiped with a clean, lint-free cloth, dampened with mineral spirits, to remove all traces of dust.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: Scrape off all loose, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking or flaking paint. Wire brushing, pressure cleaning, power sanding or sandblasting may be used to remove powdering and chalking paint.

UNPAINTED SURFACES: All surfaces should be primed before using an enamel paint in order to assure a smooth, even, glossy finish. Use a good quality primer, especially formulated for the surface being painted, following the directions on the label for the primer used. Galvanized and aluminum surfaces should be treated or primed with a product especially formulated for that purpose, before painting with this enamel. It is recommended that ferrous metals be given a coat of a rust inhibiting primer. Bare wood can be primed with a wood primer or enamel undercoater. Masonry surfaces must be dry and properly cured and then primed with a masonry primer. Let prime coat dry overnight, or until the first coat is hard, before applying finish coat. Sand lightly with fine sandpaper or fine steel wool between the prime coat and the finish coat for better adhesion and a smoother final finish.

APPLICATION: Apply with a clean, good quality brush, roller or spray. Apply only at temperatures above 50° F. (10° C). Do not apply in damp or rainy weather. Stir thoroughly before using and occasionally while using, making sure all pigment settled on the bottom of the can has been well mixed. Better, longer lasting finishes will result from using two or more coats. Two thin coats are better than one thick coat. When more than one coat is to be applied, let the first coat dry overnight, or until it is hard, before applying finish coat.

THINNING: This paint is ready to use as it is received in the can. If paint seems too thick or heavy, thin sparingly with mineral spirits.

COVERAGE: Apply at a rate not exceeding 400 square feet (37.16mē) per gallon (3.785 L) on a smooth surface. Do not apply too thick a film. Porous surfaces will absorb more paint and reduce rate of coverage.

DRYING TIME: Dries to the touch and dust free in approximately 1 hour, depending on weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind, etc. Normally dries tack free in about 4 hours, and dries hard in about 8 hours, or after drying overnight. Normally may be recoated after drying overnight.

If paint dries too rapidly, add small amounts of mineral spirits to slow the drying time. If paint dries too slowly, add small amounts of xylene, or other fast evaporating solvent, to speed the drying time.

CLEAN UP: Clean brushes with mineral spirits, turpentine or synthetic reducer.
