SOMAY® "PST"TM
Primer/Sealer/Topcoat

Product No. 777

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:  SOMAY "PST", Product No. 777-00, is a  Premium Quality, single-component, 100% Poly-Acrylic Resin-based, Waterborne, Non-Pigmented (Clear), versatile, universal, all-purpose, exterior and interior coating that can be used as a Primer, a Sealer, a Waterproofing Coating and a Topcoat or Finish Coating. Its 100% Acrylic resin formulation has excellent resistance to Ultraviolet (sun) light degradation, as well as excellent adhesion to practically every properly cleaned and prepared surface.  It dries to a hard finish and has excellent resistance to degradation due to normal pedestrian foot traffic on smooth, firm surfaces.  This waterborne coating meets all known current government VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) Regulations, and cleans up very easily with just soap and plain water.  No messy solvents; No obnoxious fumes or smells.  Exceptionally user and environmentally friendly.

SOMAY "PST" has a very low viscosity, approximately like fresh, clean water, so it can penetrate deeply into the pores of porous surfaces, and into the cracks, crevices, splits and fissures that may be present on building surfaces, in order to help seal and waterproof the surfaces to which it is applied.

As supplied by the manufacturer in the can, SOMAY "PST" has a "milky" appearance, somewhat like skim milk, but it quickly turns perfectly "Clear" as it dries, without changing the color of the surface to which is has been applied.

Like a fine quality wood varnish, SOMAY "PST" may help to highlight and emphasize the attractive grain or colors in a stone or wood surface or to highlight the colors in a painting.  However, SOMAY "PST", unlike a fine varnish, will NOT "blush" or turn "white" if moisture develops under the coating, but will remain "Clear".  Because SOMAY "PST" will always "breathe", it allows moisture vapor to escape through the cured coating film.

SURFACES ON WHICH SOMAY "PST" CAN BE USED:  SOMAY "PST" can be applied to practically any surface that needs to be primed and/or sealed, including concrete, stucco, masonry, non glazed porous brick, stone, concrete blocks, coral rocks and other porous decorative façade materials, wood, including wooden shingles, wood siding, wooden decks, docks or porch floor surfaces, wood paneling (interior and exterior), metal including aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, galvanized steel or primed tin or ferrous metal (but NOT bare or unprimed iron or steel), etc.

SOMAY "PST" can be used on practically any normal roofing material, including wooden shingles, split cedar shakes, asphalt shingles, fiberglass shingles, well-drained Built-Up Roofs (BUR), modified bitumen, tar paper, roofing paper, asphalt-based 90-pound slate, roll roofing, cap sheet, polyurethane foam (PUF), rubber, as well as sloped poured concrete surfaces, concrete flat roof tiles, clay roof tiles, Spanish tiles, barrel tiles, "Gravelock", etc.  SOMAY "PST" is particularly effective as a prime coat used on any well-drained, sloped roof surface prior to the application of SOMAY Elastomeric "ROOF MASTIC", Sealer & Protector, or any other similar roof waterproofing membrane coating.

SOMAY "PST" is excellent for use to seal the pores in the surface of a well-drained, poured concrete patio, porch, breezeway or balcony, where multiple coats can be used to waterproof the surface.  It can also be applied to porous floor surfaces, such as brick pavers, stone, coral rock, Chattahoochee rock or other colorful river rocks, used on pedestrian walkways, patios, etc. to seal the surface, highlight the colors and help to protect the surface from becoming dirty or stained.  However, SOMAY "PST " is NOT recommended for use on any driveway, warehouse or similar floor surface on which heavy vehicular traffic from forklifts, automobiles, trucks, etc. could damage any coating film on the surface.

SUFACE PREPARATION:  The secret of a successful coating application is proper surface preparation.  Surfaces MUST be free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of this coating to the surface.  A simple test is to rub the palm of your hand across the surface to be coated; ifanything comes off the surface onto your hand, the surface is NOT ready to be coated or painted.

First, be sure to totally kill all mold, mildew, fungus and other growing organisms with a 2% to 5% chlorine solution, such as regular household bleach ("Clorox"), or alternatively, thoroughly scrub the surface with a solution made with 16 fluid ounces (473 mL) of liquid household bleach and 2 fluid ounces (59 mL) of detergent that contains NO ammonia, in one gallon (3.785 L) of water.

After killing all mold, mildew, fungus, etc., high pressure water blasting (pressure cleaning with a minimum 2,500 P.S.I. at the tip of the gun) should be used to thoroughly pressure clean all surfaces prior to the application of any coating to completely remove all loose, scaling, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking, flaking, chalking or powdering paint; dust, dirt, sand, soot, grease, oil, tar, wax, soap film or petroleum-based residue; lye, lime, salt, chlorine, calcimine, efflorescence, or any other chemically reactive substance.

THINNING:  SOMAY "PST" MUST BE APPLIED FULL STRENGTH as it is supplied by the manufacturer.  NEVER THIN, DILUTE or ADULTERATE with any other material.  Any thinning will reduce the percentage of solids, which will adversely affect the adhesiveness, the priming and sealing ability and the durability of the applied coating.

APPLICATION:  Stir the product gently but thoroughly before using, but be careful not to whip air into the product by mixing too vigorously. SOMAY "PST" can be applied by brush, roller or spray.  If using a roller, we recommend using a thin nap roller, but do NOT roll back and forth too quickly, as this may result in whipping air bubbles into the coating, which can result in voids in the coating when the bubbles pop.

WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: SOMAY "PST" can be applied to slightly damp surfaces, but not to very wet surfaces.  Application to damp surfaces will significantly increase the cure/dry time of the applied coating.  Apply only when the surface temperature and the ambient temperature is at or above 50° F (10° C).  Do not apply in rainy weather, or when rain is imminent before the coating has an opportunity to dry.  Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, not in direct sunlight; keep material from freezing while in transit or storage prior to application.  Under ideal storage conditions (max. 75° F) in new, factory-sealed, unopened containers, normal shelf life should exceed 24 months, and may be as long as 60 months, although this is not recommended by the manufacturer.

DRYING TIME:  Normal drying time when 1 mil wet film is applied to a dry surface at ambient temperature during ideal drying conditions (75° F (24° C) temperature and 50% relative humidity) is approximately 30 minutes.  A longer drying time will be required if the air or surface temperature is below 50° F, if the relative humidity is higher than 50%, if the air is calm, if the surface is not exposed to direct sunlight, or if a coat more than 1 mil in thickness is applied.

APPLICATION RATES:  The theoretical spreading rate of SOMAY "PST" is 306.79 sq. ft. (28.50 sq. meters) per gallon (U.S.) (3.785 L) per one (1) mil (= 1/1000 inch = 25.4 microns or micrometers) dry film thickness (DFT) when applied to a very smooth, non-porous surface such as plate glass.  One (1) mil wet film thickness (WFT) equals .19 mils dry film thickness (DFT); or 5.23 mils wet film thickness (WFT) must be applied to achieve one (1) full mil dry film thickness  (DFT).

Allowance must be made for the roughness, or texture vs. smoothness of the surface, and for the degree of porosity vs. density of the substrate, as well as for loss or wastage due to less than 100% transfer efficiency.  Experienced coating applicators or painters normally expect 10% loss (= 90% transfer efficiency) for brush or roller application; 20% loss (= 80% transfer efficiency) for airless spray application, and 30% loss (= 70% transfer efficiency for air atomized spray application.  Thus, extra material must be purchased to compensate for these normal losses during application.

Due to the low viscosity (thinness) of SOMAY "PST", it may be difficult to apply this material at one (1) mil wet film thickness (WFT) in one coat.  Consequently, more than one (1) coat frequently will be applied.  Multiple coats can be easily and quickly applied . . . just let each coat dry before applying another coat.

Since the first coat application will normally seal many of the pores in a substrate, the application of a second coat may use somewhat less material than used on the first coat.  The application of multiple coats will eventually create a waterproofing membrane, and the more coats applied, the longer the applied coatings will last.  Also, the more coats applied, the higher the gloss will become.  Thus, when used on a floor surface, be aware that the sealed surface could become slippery, especially when wet; so for pedestrian safety, the use of a skid-resistant aggregate should be considered.

In general, the practical coverage rate when using SOMAY  "PST" as a Primer,  would be to apply one (1) or two (2) coats at the rate of approximately 250 to 275 sq. ft. per gallon per coat, depending on the roughness and the porosity of the surface.

In general, when used as a sealer for waterproofing porous surfaces, one would apply four (4) or five (5) coats at the rate of approximately 250 to 275 sq. ft. per gallon per coat, depending on the roughness and the porosity of the surface.

CLEAN UP:  Keep a cloth dampened with water handy while applying SOMAY "PST"

to wipe up spills immediately.  Clean hands, brushes, rollers, and other application equipment immediately after use in clean, warm, soapy water.

PRODUCT LIMITATIONSSOMAY "PST"  is NOT recommended for application inside of tanks or pools, below ground; or on surfaces such as flat roofs that do not drain properly and on which puddles of water collect during a rainstorm; or on concrete or similar surfaces subject to heavy vehicular traffic.
